There’s two ways of looking at this question when it comes to your wood table. And I think it’s important to find the balance between the two.
HOW DOES THE TABLE FIT IN YOUR SPACE?
The first is getting a wood table that will fit your space. You always want 2.5 to 3 feet around the table to walk and have chairs, though more space can be nice. You also want a wood table that will fit proportionally with the space it’s fitting into. If the space is long and narrow, a wood table that’s more narrow will suit better than a wide one, and vice versa.
HOW DO YOU USE THE TABLE?
The other thing to factor in is how you want to use your natural wood table. Width is very important for this. While a wider table doesn’t often contribute much to how many people can sit at a table, it does let you put more things on the table. The wider the wood table is, the easier it will be to use the table for serving meals family style.
42" WIDE TABLE
A 42” wide wood table is pretty perfect for this, most people can pass across it but there’s comfortable room on the table for plates and serving dishes in the center.
36" WIDE TABLE
36” wide allows some room for serving dishes but not a ton.
30" WIDE TABLE
30” allows very little space in the middle after the plates. So the more you want on your wood table, the wider you’ll want it to be.
CAN A TABLE BE TOO WIDE?
That being said, a wood table over 42” wide can be difficult to pass across. With a 48” or 54” wood table, if you wanted to pass dishes across a table of this size, they may need to go around the end, instead of across.

Similarly a 30” wide wood table is maybe a little narrow for a large board game, but a 48” wide wood table would be a little awkward for a chess game.
